A slab leak or a failed sewer line under a concrete foundation has to be reached somehow, and the method matters enormously to how much your life gets torn up. The direct route is to jackhammer down through the slab from inside — which means pulling up flooring, cutting concrete in your living space, working around your furniture, living beside an open pit, and then paying to rebuild the slab and refinish the floors when it's over. Under-slab tunneling takes the other route. Access tunnels are hand-dug from outside the home, beneath the foundation, straight to the section of pipe that needs work. The plumber does the repair from below, in the tunnel, and your floors are never touched.

The step people underestimate is the last one: backfill and compaction. Once the plumbing passes inspection, the tunnel has to be refilled and the soil compacted properly so the support under your slab is fully restored. Skipping or rushing that is what turns a good tunneling job into a future settlement problem — so compaction belongs to the repair, not to cleanup. Because the plumbing itself must be done by a licensed plumber in Texas, the tunneling and the plumbing get coordinated so the two halves of the job line up cleanly and the site is left solid.
